As we approach Thanksgiving, I felt a desire to step out of my comfort zone and share some of the reasons I am incredibly grateful this year.
I don’t think one truly grasps the gift of life or the quiet magnitude of the present moment until faced with the real chance of losing it all. A cancer diagnosis can do that.
My recent diagnosis snuck up on me with no warning. Even as I write this, with battle wounds and a pathology report to prove it, I remain in disbelief.
I believe that there are hidden blessings in every struggle we face and that through painful experiences, we can grow the most. On this Thanksgiving Eve, I’m reflecting on some of the things for which I’m so grateful.
๐ My husband, holding down a home and a job while raising two children across the world
๐ My children, who are proof of the wonder of life; their creation and existence give me hope that my body can do other amazing things when it comes to fighting cancer
๐ The time I have been given to spend with my parents in the US while I undergo treatment; living across the country & overseas for nearly 20 years has limited those opportunities
๐ My circle of friends all over the world who provide love and support to my family; as any expat knows, your friends overseas quickly become your family
๐ My health and my faith; to fight a battle like this would not be possible with my physical and spiritual strength
๐ The opportunities my family has had to live all over the world; the experience has instilled in me a sense of awe that – even if cancer has different plans for me – I have already lived one thousand lives
๐ Modern medicine, second opinions, and the care made available to me; I know not everyone has that opportunity
๐ The time I have been gifted with my childhood friend who lives in the town where I grew up and am staying; reconnecting with her and knowing she stands by my side is a blessing
๐ My courage, resilience, and positivity; I donโt know yet what my future holds, but Iโm certainly not going down without a fight and a smile
๐ The cancer fighters and survivors that I have met; I’m proud to be a member of such an inspirational group of warriors
For these reasons and more, I focus on the many blessings in my life that outweigh whatever cancer throws at me. I hope my words of gratitude inspire you to count the many blessings in your life tomorrow and beyond.
