I used to think success meant having it all figured out. That if I just worked hard enough, made the right choices, and avoided mistakes, I’d reach a place where everything clicked into place—where life and business would be smooth sailing. But the truth? My journey has been anything but perfect.
After years of growing a thriving international business, 9/11 changed everything. The world froze, travel stopped, and my company collapsed overnight. I was overextended, drowning in financial obligations for trips that would never happen. Within a year, I was bankrupt. It was humbling, terrifying, and, at the time, it felt like failure.
But here’s the thing about failure: It’s one of life’s greatest teachers.
That season of uncertainty forced me to pivot and rediscover what I truly loved—connecting people, curating great conversations, and helping others share ideas that change lives. If I had obsessed over perfection, I might have stayed stuck in the shame of losing my business. Instead, I embraced the messiness of reinvention.
There’s an old Sanskrit poem often called Rules for Being Human, which captures life’s reality better than most things I’ve read. Here are a few of my favorite of its 10 rules:
📌 You will receive a body. You may love it or hate it, but it’s yours for the duration of your life.
📌 You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called “Life.”
📌 There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial and error.
This mindset shift changed everything for me. Life doesn’t reward perfection—it rewards those who keep learning, adapting, and moving forward. Embracing progress over perfection has not only reshaped my personal journey but also transformed my approach to business and leadership.
Research shows that perfectionism can lead to stress, burnout, and even anxiety. Shifting our mindset to value progress over perfection makes us more creative, confident, and fulfilled.
✅ Studies indicate that people who adopt a growth mindset—valuing effort over flawless outcomes—are more likely to succeed in both their careers and personal lives.
✅ Positive self-talk has been proven to increase resilience, improve problem-solving abilities, and open up new opportunities. Saying those empowering words out loud can create even more profound effects.
✅ Perfectionism is often linked to procrastination and a paralyzing fear of failure—two obstacles that hold us back from achieving our true potential.
This transformation in mindset has been a game changer. It reminds us that progress, not perfection, is what leads to success. By focusing on making steady improvements and celebrating small victories, we unlock the true power of positivity.
Throughout my journey, I’ve learned that the voices we listen to can either stifle our growth or propel us forward. The journey towards personal and professional success isn’t a straight line—it’s a series of twists, turns, failures, and breakthroughs. Embracing imperfection and focusing on progress over perfection doesn’t mean you settle for mediocrity; it means you value learning and growth above unattainable standards.
Research shows that a positive mindset increases resilience and creativity, both of which are essential for overcoming obstacles. When you focus on progress, you celebrate each small victory, fueling your momentum and empowering you to tackle bigger challenges. Positivity isn’t just about feeling good—it’s a strategic asset that drives innovation, leadership, and lasting success.
Consider these key insights:
In the realm of business, a positive attitude can be the catalyst for innovation and success. Leaders who foster positivity and emphasize progress over perfection create cultures where employees are engaged, resilient, and ready to tackle challenges head-on. This isn’t just good for morale—it’s good for business. Organizations that invest in employee engagement and prioritize a positive work culture tend to see higher productivity and better overall performance.
A positive workplace culture also supports leadership and drives sustainable business success. When leaders model a commitment to growth and authenticity, they inspire their teams to do the same. This approach not only leads to better business outcomes but also cultivates a more fulfilling, resilient work environment.
At its core, the journey of progress is deeply personal. It’s about embracing your humanity—the flaws, the failures, and the moments of brilliance that define who you are. By letting go of the myth of perfection, you open yourself up to a world of possibilities. You become free to innovate, to take risks, and to grow in ways you never imagined.
Remember:
For leaders, the implications of embracing progress over perfection are profound. Leaders who adopt this mindset are better equipped to inspire their teams, navigate uncertainty, and drive meaningful change. They understand that true leadership is about continuous improvement and fostering an environment where innovation thrives.
By encouraging a culture that values learning and resilience, leaders can help their teams overcome obstacles and seize opportunities. This approach not only benefits individual employees but also builds a stronger, more agile organization. It’s about creating a legacy of empowerment, attitude, and inspirational & motivational leadership that propels the entire organization forward.
