The Keynote Curators was honored to bring Ben Nemtin, cofounder of MTV’s The Buried Life and bestselling author of What Do You Want to Do Before You Die?, to LPL Financial‘s exclusive Masters Program last week in Florida. There, he uplifted an audience of LPL’s top advisors, encouraging them to pursue their life goals—even live their wildest dreams.
? Always a cheerful kid, Ben thrived in Canada until his first year at university. With an academic scholarship and a spot on the U-19 Canadian Rugby Team, life seemed promising. However, sudden depression and anxiety derailed his plans. Unable to attend school or rugby practice, he dropped out and became reclusive at his parents’ home. Realizing he lived for others’ perceptions, not his own desires, Ben sought inspiration from new company. With friends Jonnie, Dave, and Duncan, he crafted a list of ‘100 things to do before you die’. Their pact: for each item checked off, they’d help a stranger’s dream come true. And so Ben embarked on a transformative journey.
Dubbed “The Buried Life,” their mission echoed the sentiments of a 150-year-old poem by Matthew Arnold, capturing the feeling of buried dreams. Armed with an RV, a second-hand camera, and a list of seemingly impossible goals, Ben and his friends embarked on a transformative two-week road trip. What followed defied all expectations: strangers rallied to support their bucket list endeavors and shared their own dreams, igniting an unexpected ripple effect. Little did they know, their journey would inspire millions to unearth their aspirations and pursue their buried dreams.
His moving keynote at LPL’s Masters Program stressed the significance of bucket lists for providing structure for fulfilling dreams and developing muscle to help others achieve their dreams.
Like Ben, we all have secret dreams––goals we’d love to accomplish that get buried by life’s daily duties. But as he stresses, time is shorter than we often like to believe. Sometimes, we need to leap and trust that the net will appear.
? What’s left to achieve on Ben’s bucket list? Make the cover of Rolling Stone. Yell “You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!” in a court of law. Host Saturday Night Live. And go to space.
