Mira Murati is an Albanian-American engineer and one of the most influential leaders in modern artificial intelligence. Born in Vlorë, Albania, on December 16, 1988, she grew up in a rapidly changing post-communist society before earning a scholarship at age sixteen to attend Pearson College UWC in Canada. She later pursued her studies in the United States through a dual-degree program, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Colby College and a Bachelor of Engineering from Dartmouth College’s Thayer School of Engineering.
Mira Murati began her career with technical and international experience, including work with Goldman Sachs in Tokyo and aerospace manufacturer Zodiac Aerospace. In 2013, she joined Tesla as a Senior Product Manager and contributed to the development of the Model X. Her passion for emerging technology led her to Leap Motion (now Ultraleap), where she helped shape next-generation augmented reality tools.
In 2018, she joined OpenAI, where her leadership helped define an era. Rising to Chief Technology Officer in 2022, Murati oversaw the development and deployment of breakthrough technologies including ChatGPT and DALL·E. She briefly served as OpenAI’s interim CEO during a pivotal leadership transition in 2023. Her work placed her at the center of global conversations about artificial intelligence, ethics, and the future of human-AI collaboration.
In 2024, Mira Murati stepped away from OpenAI to pursue new directions in AI research and innovation. In 2025, she founded Thinking Machines Lab, a public-benefit corporation dedicated to building safe, accessible, and customizable AI systems. Her work continues to shape the trajectory of AI development, emphasizing responsibility, transparency, and human-centered progress.
