Biography

Sir Dave Brailsford CBE is a world-renowned former British cycling coach and current Team Principal and Director of Sport at INEOS. With over two decades of experience, the British Cycling Hall of Famer has engaged audiences with his experience-filled speeches and become one of the most inspirational motivational speakers in the industry.

As the current Team Principal and Director of Sport at Team Ineos Grenadiers, Dave brings experience and expertise to the team he has been a part of since 2010 when they began racing as Team Sky. The team received several cycling awards and honours during his term. He also led many athletes to cycling victories, including two consecutive Tour de France wins (2012-13) and another four successive Tours de France triumphs from (2015-18).

In his former role as performance director of British Cycling, Dave gained much-acclaimed fame, particularly for his concept of ‘marginal gains’. This philosophy states that one should aim to make all possible improvements in any area of a sport, no matter how small or insignificant the progress may seem, even if by a margin of 1%. Although initially regarded as counterintuitive, this concept has since been adopted by other athletes and has become widely accepted in different industries such as economics and the UK education policy.

While acting as performance director, Great Britain managed to secure two gold medals for cycling at the 2004 Olympic Games, their best performance since 1908. These victories were merely the beginning, as Dave continued to motivate and galvanise the cycling team to improve and outperform in multiple categories such as road, BMX, track and mountain bike racing. With eight gold medals won at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, the British team dominated the medals table in the cycling category. During the decade from 2003 to 2013, British cyclists, across various disciplines, brought home 59 World Championships.

In 2005, Dave was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) and later appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2008. He is the proud holder of two BBC Sports Personality of the Year’s Coach Awards granted to him in 2008 and 2012 – following Great Britain’s stellar performances at the Olympics. Later in 2012, Dave was appointed as a Knight Bachelor for his services to cycling at the Olympics and the Paralympic Games and was officially inducted into the British Cycling Hall of Fame in October 2016.

Sir Dave Brailsford authored the book “21 Days to Glory: The Official Team Sky Book of the 2012 Tour de France”(2012), where the insider story of Team Sky’s 2012 Tour de France is covered.
