𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐓𝐨 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 📢

It’s everywhere. Race relations and how to improve them. I was thinking about how difficult a subject it is to talk about.

We have an incredibly diverse team in our agency; Latino, Female, African, Jewish, European – we are a veritable United Nations. But it still is a challenge to talk about race at work.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫? 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞. Avoiding tough subjects like race also bleeds into other challenging topic areas and creates an environment where tough topics are not addressed.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐓𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭:

🔑 𝑩𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅 the intention, focus, and safety needed to have honest conversations about race.

🔑 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕 the sensitivity of the topic while challenging people to go beyond the superficial.

🔑 𝑨𝒄𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒆𝒅𝒈𝒆 the uncomfortable realities of the past and the present.

🔑 𝑽𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒆 the experiences of your racially marginalized employees.

🔑 𝑬𝒎𝒑𝒉𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒛𝒆 how your company is prioritizing goals and metrics around racial equity.

This will result in:
Moving from “Uneasy & Uncomfortable” to “Confident & Caring”
Leading to better decision-making, greater innovation, and higher engagement in the workplace.

It will improve a company’s reputation and make it easier to attract top talent.
