Book Danelle Umstead through The Keynote Curators
Biography
Danelle Umstead is a Paralympic ski racing champion, motivational speaker, and advocate for people with disabilities.
Diagnosed at age thirteen with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition that causes total blindness, Danelle Umstead discovered skiing at twenty-nine when her father introduced her to the slopes. From that moment, she found a lifelong passion.
Together with her husband and guide, Rob Umstead, she founded Team Vision4Gold, making history as the first husband-and-wife visually impaired ski racing team to compete for Team USA. The duo earned multiple Paralympic medals, including bronze in downhill and super combined at the 2010 Vancouver Games and another bronze in the super combined at the 2014 Sochi Games.
Danelle Umstead’s journey has been marked by resilience. Shortly after her Paralympic success in 2010, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which temporarily paralyzed half her body. Determined to continue, she relearned how to walk—and eventually, how to ski again.
Danelle Umstead’s achievements have been widely recognized. She was named Athlete of the Year in 2010 by the National Sports Center for the Disabled and Adaptive Athlete of the Year in 2011 by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. That same season, she captured the overall and super G World Cup titles.
Beyond the slopes, Danelle Umstead inspires audiences worldwide with her keynote, “How to Do the Impossible Every Day,” where she shares powerful lessons on perseverance, teamwork, and overcoming obstacles. She is also writing her memoir and actively gives back by mentoring young athletes with disabilities.
Passionate about empowering others, she founded the Sisters in Sports Foundation in 2021 to support girls and women with disabilities through sports. In her personal life, she enjoys hiking, paddle boarding, camping, cooking, and spending time on adventures with her family.
