On International Men’s Day, we celebrate their contributions and tackle the challenges they face through the lens of six defining pillars.

Established in 1999 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a professor at the University of the West Indies, International Men’s Day was created to address the need for a global platform celebrating the positive aspects of male identity. Dr. Teelucksingh saw the need for a day that would honor men who contribute positively to their communities and highlight important issues impacting them, such as health, discrimination, and mental well-being. He believed that promoting positive male role models—beyond celebrities and athletes—would help break down harmful stereotypes, foster gender equality, and encourage a more inclusive conversation about the diverse experiences of men worldwide.

Rooted in six core pillars, International Men’s Day underscores the essential roles men play and the challenges they encounter. These guiding principles help us focus on the vital aspects of men’s lives and remind us of the work still needed to foster a world that supports and uplifts men everywhere.

  1. Promote Positive Male Role Models: Highlighting not only the famous men we see on TV or in sports but also the everyday—fathers, brothers, and community leaders—who live with integrity and contribute to the greater good.
  2. Celebrate Men’s Positive Contributions: This initiative recognizes men’s contributions to family, community, marriage, child care, and the environment, reinforcing their active roles in shaping society.
  3. Focus on Their Health and Well-being: This focus addresses men’s physical, emotional, and social health and promotes healthier lifestyles for the future.
  4. Highlight Discrimination Against Men: Examining societal and institutional barriers that affect them, including issues in social services, attitudes toward masculinity, and legal inequalities.
  5. Promote Gender Equality: Encouraging equality and healthy relationships between genders, supporting progress in the fight for equality across all sectors of life.
  6. Create a Safer, Better World: Building a world where people of all genders are safe, supported, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.

Keynote Speaker David Allison Shines an Urgent Spotlight on Prostate Cancer and Men’s Health

A core pillar of International Men’s Day is men’s health and well-being, an area often overlooked but incredibly important. Men face higher rates of certain health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, mental health struggles, and prostate cancer. Yet, prostate cancer, one of the most common cancers affecting men, is also one of the most preventable when detected early.

Keynote speaker and shared human values expert David Allison is using his platform to raise awareness and advocate for men’s health, especially regarding prostate cancer. Recently, David shared his personal battle with prostate cancer in an Instagram post, urging men to get checked annually and sparking necessary conversations around early detection. His message is clear: 400,000 men will die from prostate cancer each year, and many of these deaths are preventable. Prostate cancer is almost entirely curable if caught early, yet so many of them neglect to seek screening, which could save their lives.

David’s courage in speaking out helps break the stigma surrounding health challenges and encourages men to take charge of their well-being. His openness about his diagnosis is a powerful reminder that health is an ongoing conversation—one that needs to be nurtured for men of all ages. By sharing his story, David inspires current and future generations to prioritize their health. Early detection can truly make the difference between life and death.
